Essay 2: Explaining a Concept

Explaining Concepts Essay Assignment- ENGL 1110-Prof. Parks

This essay will need to be 3+ pages typed, double-spaced 12 pt Times New Roman. If you choose to use sources, use MLA citation format.

You may choose any concept you feel confident enough to explain. Avoid obscure topics with which you are unfamiliar. The essay must include at least three of the six strategies for explaining concepts

Prewriting/Organizing Strategies

1.     Make a Bubble Chart  or list of ideas, examples, illustrations, comparisons, causes, effects, and definitions related to your concept.


Sample/ Outline Structure of the Essay 

The Beginning:
Open with an interesting quotation, or with a general statement about the concept, or with a surprising fact or with a question.
Briefly describe your concept and then define the concept in your own way.
Provide background information of the concept.   You may use your personal experience.
Write a thesis statement 
Forecast your plan how you explain your concept.

The Body:
In each body paragraph, you may use definition, classification, comparison and contrast,   narrative process, and cause and effect, if needed.  In order to help readers understand the information, use specific terms for categories, concrete examples, simile, and/or metaphor.  Use also personal experience.

The Ending:
Reiterate the thesis in different words and add a recommendation for action to the reader.
Frame the essay by relating the end to the beginning.
End with a memorable quote that helps pull together the broader significance of the subject of the paper.
