ENGL 1110: Essay Revision
Assignment (80 pts)
Revised essay is due at the
FINAL EXAM.
Instructions: Choose 1 of your first three essays (Profile, Explaining a Concept,
Evaluation) and complete any combination of the following revisions to earn up
to 80 points. Along with your revision, you will be required to hand in the
following checklist. Your revised essay should be saved as a DIFFERENT file
from your original final draft. I have to see both drafts in order to assess the
quality of the revisions. If you delete your original final draft, there is no
way to earn credit for this revision. Please make sure you do not alter the original
draft you handed in. You can print the draft or save it to GoogleDrive.
Options:
___ 20 New Introduction:
Write a completely new introduction for the paper. It should be engaging,
clearly written, and should introduce the topic in an original way. It can be
longer or shorter than the original. To earn the full 20 points, the
introduction must be free from grammatical errors.
___ 10 New Conclusion. If
your original paper had a very basic (tell them what you told them) conclusion,
rewrite it to provide further thinking, raise new questions, or simply to be
more direct and concise.
___ 20 Reorganize/Refocus one
main point paragraph. Take one specific main point paragraph and write a
stronger topic sentence, add more transitions or transitional words to make the
ideas flow better, and edit out any unrelated ideas to make the paragraph more
focused. (May be done twice)
___ 20 New Main Point Paragraph.
Add a completely new main point paragraph. This paragraph should be completely
original to the paper. It should add a new observation, definition, or judgment
(depending on the topic). It should be well organized and use appropriate
vocabulary and transitions. (May be done twice)
__ 10 Word Choices. Go
through the essay and choose 10 words to replace for a more precise and formal
vocabulary. Cut out overused phrases, clichés, and any words that you repeat
multiple times in the same consecutive sentences.
__10 Sentence Structure. Go
through the essay and choose sentences to connect or condense for clarity. This
could include revising “there is” and “there are” sentences or reversing the
sentences to have more dependent clauses. You can also combine sentences. To
receive full 10 points, at least 5 sentences need to be changed.
__ 10 Grammar/Punctuation/MLA
format. If you had MLA format errors, multiple grammar errors, comma errors,
and/or run-on sentences, go through the essay and revise these closely. Have
someone else look over your grammar as you revise this as well. To receive the
full 10 points for this revision I must see significant changes.
