2. Read pp. 407-415 in Concise Guide and use this as a guide while you draft your 600-800 word rough draft. Some of the info on these pages will be on the final, so check it over.
3. Monday's Critique session is 10% of the grade on the paper and CANNOT be made up. Be on time with your draft. No time left for catch-up.

Friday, Nov. 21st, 2014

*Type & Print all Three Items Below. They can be front/back on the same page, but you should bring them to class so I can check them over while you are working on the in-class writing activity.

1. Create a full outline of your essay. Minimum of 50 words. Use the models from pp. 194-95 in Concise Guide. See samples on main blog page on Thursday.

2. Write TWO separate introductory paragraphs. One paragraph should take a very firm stance right away. The other should present the issue in a more nuanced and balanced way.

3. Compose 1 main point paragraph.  Use the model from the handout in class to get you started. Be sure you have a solid claim, evidence, and that you acknowledge opposing views by refuting or conceding as necessary.

Wednesday, Nov. 19th, 2014

1.  Continue adding to the journal questions we started at the end of class on Monday. These questions are located on pp. 190-191 in Concise Guide. If you can answer most or all of the questions listed in the green boxes, you'll be set up well to complete you outline on Wednesday. There is no word count required for the notes/answers to questions on these boxes, but I will check for some notes when you hand in the final paper.

*Another option, if you don't find the green boxes helpful, is to think of it as a LETTER.  Write up a one page letter trying to convince someone of your position. This could easily be reformatted into an outline on Wednesday. Try it! It works!

2. Choose one outline from pp. 194-95 in Concise Guide for your paper. We will outline in class, but you should think critically about which one you will choose prior to class. You can start your outline ahead of time if you'd like.

3. Research your topic in more depth and get the accurate information necessary. Email or call me for an argument : )

Monday, Nov. 17th, 2014

Wednesday, Oct. 15th, 2014

Instructions: Apply one or more of the following sentence-level strategies to your paper. This will help you with diction, organization, and punctuation. Your punctuation is a tool for controlling pace and meaning in your paper.

1. Erase all the punctuation in one or more paragraphs and reread the paragraph a couple times to yourself. Then, redo the punctuation while adding new conjunctions or punctuation to clarify sentences and vary your phrasing.

2. Erase the verbs in one or more paragraphs to help you focus in on other word choices. This will help you see if you are using a variety of adverbs, nouns, adjectives, and conjunctions. This will help you to change word choices to make a more vivid paper.

3. Rewrite a paragraph in reverse order. Start with the last sentence and write the entire paragraph from the bottom up. Read the reverse paragraph a couple times. Then, when you put it back in order, you should find opportunities for adding in more information, clearer transitions, or for cutting out repetition.

*I will ask you to reflect on this exercise on Wednesday in a journal at the beginning of class.

Monday, Oct. 13th, 2014

Friday, Oct. 3, 2014

1.Visual Outline Assignment Due Friday: Bring in an original drawing or adapted image that relates to your overall concept. For example, if you are writing about baseball, you could draw a baseball field and then plot out some key ideas onto the drawing. Or, if you are writing about romantic love, you could use a drawing of a heart and then plot ideas into different parts of the heart. This can be made on a computer or hand drawn. Try to find an image that captures a key aspect of the concept. The grade on this assignment will be based on completion and how it relates to your topic, not the quality of the drawing. Obviously, I'm not qualified to be an art critic : )

2. Bring all your notes, sources, and other materials related to your concept topic. Keep in mind, you will have working drafts coming up on Monday, Oct. 6th.

Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014

1. Read, Research, Read. Get familiar with your concept from many angles and sources.

3. When you come to class Wednesday, you should be prepared to do some extensive in class writing on your concept. I will be presenting a series of questions asking you to explain the concept in various ways.  This will help prepare us for Friday's "Visual" assignment.

Do some thorough CATALOG SEARCHES in the Nicholson library.
